What to bring to French Guiana
Equipement:
- It is more advantageous to bring your own material rather than buy it on the spot, especially sport & leisure articles. For instance, if you are passionately fond of golf, we recommend you to bring your golf clubs. It is also interesting to bring bulky items by cargo, such as bicycles or surf boards.
- You do not need any licence to hunt in French Guiana, but there is a regulation about the protected species. Concerning the fishing in French Guiana, you do not need any licence either, and there is no restriction of any kind. However, each type of fishing requires a particular sort of material:
- For river fishing, a heavy rod (like those used for pikes) of ten feet maximum is the best. You would also need a 15 to 30 lbs reel. Also bring your fishing box with lures, and pliers to remove the hook and avoid being bitten (piranha fishing).
- If you go for a sea trip, you would need a cap, sunglasses and some sun-cream.
- For sea fishing, we would recommend an eight to 12 foot,
"surf casting", rod, with a 50 lbs reel.
- For big game fishing, the material is supplied by the organiser of the trip.
- If you want to walk in the forest, here is a list of what you would need : a rucksack, a frontal lamp, an old pair of Jean's, a pocket knife, a raining poncho, some insect repellent cream or spray (available locally), a cap, or a hat, sunglasses, some sun-cream (preferably sun block), bathing suits, a sweat-shirt (for the night)...
Optional : binoculars, sleeping bag (light), cool bags or boxes.
- You may wish to bring your camera, as there are very nice pictures to be done in French Guiana. However, you will have to take extra care of your material during your stay because of the humidity, and be wary of the sun exposure while taking pictures. Do not hesitate to contact us if you want more precisions.
- It is possible for missionaries to fly ULMs and small planes on condition that you send your document (pilot licence, flight book, one passport-size picture, insurance) at least one month before your arrival in French Guiana. No formalities are required for first-time flights as passenger in ULMs.
